As a reminder, any owner, operator, or agents in charge of domestic or foreign facilities that manufacture/process, pack or hold food for consumption in the U.S. are required to renew your Food and Drug Administration (FDA) food facility registration prior to December 31, 2020. Food facility owners must submit renewal electronically through their FDA Industry System account.
For the first time, FDA now requires each facility to have a DUNS number. This has caused some concern with regards to registration renewal since some cases have taken up to 90 days to obtain the DUNS number. FDA issued guidance that will allow registrants who will not have the DUNS number prior to the December 31 deadline, to enter “PENDING” in the Unique Facility Identifier (UFI) field. The registrant is then granted 90 days to update the registration by providing a DUNS number when received. Failure to update the registration will result in cancellation of the food facility registration by the FDA.
Per FDA this additional requirement of reporting a UFI will be used to verify that the facility-specific address associated with the UFI matches the address associated with the facility’s registration.
Food facilities with questions about the registration process should contact the FURLS Helpdesk by telephone (800-216-7331 or 240-247-8804) or by email (FURLS@fda.gov).
