Canada Updates Import Requirements for Organic Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has provided updated guidance concerning the import of organic fresh fruits and vegetables. Effective October 1st, 2020, imports of these products will require a digital copy of the organic product certification (certificate) be provided with the Integrated Import Declaration (IID) transmitted for customs release purposes.

Importers should take careful note of these new requirements. They should ensure organic certificates are provided to the custom broker in advance on any applicable imports or included with each import document package used for entry purposes.

Failure to provide an organic product certificate for applicable import transactions may result in cargo being delayed or refused entry into Canada.

On June 10, 2019, new organic product extensions were added to CFIA’s Automated Import Reference Systems (AIRS) database.

Additional information may be requested directly from CFIA’s Canada Organic Regime team, at cfia.opr-rpb.acia@canada.ca.
