IMO announces tougher sulfur emissions restrictions

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced tougher ship rules on sulfur emissions. The rules will come into effect on January 1, 2020.

Beginning in 2020, the sulfur content in fuel cannot exceed 0.5%, down from the current 3.5%. Only ships with sulfur-cleaning devices called scrubbers will be permitted to continue to burn high-sulfur fuel. The goal of the new regulations is to reduce air pollution.
