By way of background, in response to the section 232 tariffs imposed by the US on Canadian steel and aluminum products, Canada applied reciprocal surtaxes effective July 1, 2018 on certain imports of steel, aluminum and other products from the U.S.
However, to protect the competitiveness of businesses affected by these countermeasures, the Government has provided duty relief for specific products, which has been granted to those importers who applied through the use of a special authority or what are known as “remission orders.”
The list of products for which duty relief has been granted at this time can be found here. The link to Customs Notice 18-16, which provides additional details on these relief measures is to be found here.
An importer presently incurring the surtax on those goods covered by a remission order or for additional information on the surtax imposed on US-origin goods and the relief measures in place, please do not hesitate to contact your local Delmar International representative or our North American Customs Advisory Services Group at firstname.lastname@example.org.
